[Old but serviceable SPD logo]

Announcing the SPD Logo Competition!

What is it? A competition for the best new logo design for the Solar Physics Division of the American Astronomical Society (SPD). The old one (see the top of this page) has had an honourable tour of duty, but lacks what it takes in the modern era. Our new logo should include the following attributes:

  1. Should look good on letterheads, as a logo on a poster, or on web pages

  2. Should look good both in color and in black and white

  3. Should photocopy well, reduce/expand well - simplicity of design is best!

  4. (Of course) should explicitly include the Sun somehow! possibly in relation to the earth and stars

Why should you be interested in entering? Simple, we're offering a CASH PRIZE of $500! And of course you will be enriching the solar physics community.

How does the contest work? We will begin evaluating contributions on January 1, 2003, but the contest will remain open until we select a winner. For more information, see the official rules.

Note: you do not have to be a solar physicist or even a scientist to enter. Please pass this announcement on to anyone who might be interested. However, all entries should reflect the fact that the Solar Physics Division of the American Astronomical Society embraces studies of the Sun itself, from its interior to its atmosphere, as well as connections between the Sun and the Earth and between the Sun and other stars.
